Science tip:
The north end of magnets are so called because, freely suspended, they point towards the Earth’s North Pole. The north pole of a compass needle (usually coloured red or black) also points towards the Earth’s North Pole.
Since opposite poles attract, the north pole of a compass needle is attracted to a magnet’s south pole.
If we imagine the Earth as a large magnet, the North Pole is actually the magnetic south pole. That is why the north poles of magnets point towards the North Pole.
It may get confusing but remember:
– North pole of a compass needle (coloured red or black) is the north pole of a magnet.
– This end points towards the south pole of another magnet
– This end points towards the Earth’s North Pole (which is actually a magnetic south pole).
The answer to the question attached is (2).
