In this first instalment of Wallace’s corner, I tackle a question posed by one parent.
It’s a seemingly easy P5/6 question on area. However, due to the many steps involved many students may get this wrong. Also it requires lateral thinking, i.e. solving problems through an indirect and creative approach, using reasoning that is not immediately obvious and involving ideas that may not be obtainable by using only traditional step-by-step logic.
If you look at my solution above, my shift in the small box simplifies the entire question without changing the area and it’s easier to solve this.
