Question: I did badly for my J1 promotion. I am devastated and A Level exams seem to be in a few months. What can I do? Answer: I think this is fabulous news. 1) You got promoted! It’s not rare for students to retake JC1 so congratulations. 2) You are panicking in January. That’s a good start. Here are a few things you can do to strategise. 1. Revise your J1 work to work on your fundamentals. It is not easy to run if you can’t walk. 2. Think about what course you want to take in university and the requirement needed. Set a goal towards that. If you do not know yet, take some time to research and discuss with your teachers and parents. It is important to have a goal for yourself. Don’t just study blindly. 3. Form study groups with your friends to push yourself. Share notes, split the work- everyone can do different chapters and the subsequent mindmaps. 4. Don’t be afraid to ask. Clear all doubts now than later. Don’t move on to the next chapter until you understand. It’s not about speed. It’s about understanding the material and being able to explain it. 5. You can still have some rest. Don’t burn yourself out so early in the year. Have some fun too. Some people make the best friends in JC. As I teach GP, I can only advise on this subject. 1) Remember, you cannot do last minute work for GP so don’t. 2) Again, be strategic. Look at the categories that will be tested (e.g. art, tech, family) and the type of questions asked. When you are reading the papers, make an effort to look out for such news as it is good for examples cited to be up to date. 3) Don’t forget the important Singapore issues too as you would need them for your application question. There is an election this year, so pay attention to it. 4) Don’t just read the Straits Times. Read the NYT, WSJ, Economists etc. You will also learn different writing styles and different angles of different news by broadening your news source. 5) Instead of just spot news, read opinion pieces widely. Not only does it give u a perspective, but it also teaches u how to structure a viewpoint effectively. Good luck! I am sure you will be brilliant! #thurswithwei #jc #gp #studyingtips
