Question from a S3 student
I feel stupid and stressed. I am slower than the rest. My friends always say they don’t study, but they always do so much better than me. When I study in school, they would jeer at me and I feel very pressurised. Should I not study? I don’t want to be an outcast and studying doesn’t help any way.
Answer:
First, let me give you a tight slap.
*slaps*
Now that you have woken up. Listen to me.
1. When people say they don’t study, they do. At home. Don’t be naïve.
2. If they jeer at you for studying, they are not your friends. Throw away “things” that don’t spark joy.
3. We don’t live for the approval of others. We live for ourselves. We study because we want to learn, to get into the courses of our dreams, to have a bright future. Not because some friend that you will lose touch with in a year’s time wants you to.
I don’t know if you are stupid. Chances are you aren’t. But I know you are a defeatist. Stop moping and stop feeling sorry for yourself. Get over yourself and look ahead.
1. What is your goal? Get that straight.
Do you want 8 A1s, get into JC or ? Set a goal.
2. Find out what you did wrong.
Did you do last min revision? Did you rush through the text? Did you do mind maps? Did you understand what you are studying?
3. Clarify any doubts.
Ask your teachers whenever you don’t understand something. It could be in class or after class. Don’t be afraid of being a nuisance. You are not. And back to the earlier point, we don’t live for the approval of others. Do what needs to be done.
Try these and get back to me in two months.
Whenever you want to give up, look into the mirror, that’s the real enemy. That slacker. Get rid of him.
Tell yourself you deserve a better future, a better you.
